8 Proven Home Remedies for Sinus Congestion Relief

At some point, most people will experience what it’s like to deal with pain and pressure from sinuses. To combat those symptoms, there will be some that choose to take prescribed medication and others will opt to resort to natural remedies due to a cold, allergies or sinus infection for relief.

To help fight and break the sinus pain and stuffiness cycle, try these 8 proven home remedies for sinus congestion relief.

1. Get Steamy! Taking a steamy shower allows you to breathe in hot water vapor steam to loosen the sinuses. Another trick to try is to boil a pot of water and breathe the steam in slowly while holding your head over for brief periods at a time. Investing in a humidifier in your bedroom will help provide a great deal of relief too.

2. Rinsing your nasal passages. A great recommended product to try is the Neti pot. It is a saline wash that helps thin the mucus and drain out of the nasal passages. You can purchase a neti pot at your local pharmacy, major retailer or online via Amazon. Another solution to try is a salt water rinse. Trying both methods can help break up the congestion in your nose.

3. Stay hydrated. It is important to stay hydrated which will help keep your sinuses moist. Steering clear of alcoholic and high caffeinated drinks is a good idea as it causes dehydration. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Some people even add herbal tea as a part of their hot/warm liquid solution to help fight sinus congestion but be sure to limit your caffeine intake.

4. Using a warm compress. A simple method that requires applying a warm, wet towel that is steamy to help moisten the nasal tissues and position across your nasal area. It is okay to use a cold pack which can be a bag of frozen peas or vegetables wrapped in a towel and that should help relieve sinus pain too.

5. Adding extra pillow for bedtime rest. The worst pain to suffer is congestion during the night while trying to sleep. A quick fix is to add another pillow to help provide relief for congested nasal passages. It also doesn’t hurt to try nasal strips when trying this method. A goodnight’s rest is always the best defense to heal the body.

6. Spicy foods. If you’re brave, adding spicy foods to your meals can help open your nasal passages such as mustard, curry, wasabi, horseradish and hot peppers.

7. Menthol. This can be done by purchasing vapor rub and placing a small dab directly under your nose to open up nasal passages making it easier to breathe. Another trick to try that is effective are menthol cough drops. Menthol, eucalyptus, and camphor all have mild numbing ingredients that help relieve pain when blowing your nose too much and too hard.
